Mercedes driver George Russell, who finished second at the British Grand Prix, made a striking assessment of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Russell himself stated that his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the championship, has shown more consistent performance over the nine races this year.<\/p>\n
Russell, considered one of the strongest contenders for the championship at the start of the season, expected to solidify his position with Mercedes' competitive car. However, Antonelli, in only his second F1 season, achieved five consecutive race victories and took the top spot in the championship. Thus, predictions that the Italian driver would take on a secondary role within the team were completely disproven.<\/p>\n
At Silverstone, Antonelli failed to score points due to a mechanical failure, while Russell gained 18 points from second place; this result reduced the championship gap between the two drivers to 25 points. However, Russell believes this figure offers a realistic overview of the season.<\/p>\n
The British driver said in his remarks at Silverstone: \u201cI\u2019m not entirely sure if the luck factor has been balanced out. But looking at our performances over all nine races, I think the 25-point lead he has is accurate. He\u2019s done better than me so far this season; therefore, he deserves to be ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
Russell also commented on the exact size of the gap: \u201cWhether the gap should be 10 points, 25 points, or 35 points is debatable; however, it is generally reasonable for it to hover around these levels.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition, Russell pointed out how a pit lane penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix affected the balance of the season: \u201cThe penalty I received in Monaco cost me around 15 points. Therefore, I consider it fair that my rival is between 10 and 30 points ahead of me.\u201d<\/p>\n
