Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies agreed, confirming that rivals had a significant advantage on the straights at Spa-Francorchamps. These statements have become a focal point of discussion as the second phase of the FIA's engine equalization system, ADUO, draws to a close with the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Background to Wolff's admission statement

George Russell was forced to retire from the Belgian GP after contact with Lewis Hamilton. Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports F1, blamed the problem on his team: ’We experienced a lack of power on the straights in all the Mercedes engines, and this seriously affected George; the responsibility is 100% ours.“ Wolff also stated: ”We are doing our best; we have the most powerful engine, a strong car capable of winning, everyone is trying to minimize mistakes, but these mistakes still happen because we are human.“ Wolff also commented on the course of the season: ”We disappointed Kimi Antonelli at Silverstone; one of our cars failed to score points in Montreal, and the other in Barcelona.“

Red Bull drew attention to the second phase of ADUO.

Wolff's comments resonated within the Red Bull camp. Team principal Laurent Mekies said after the Belgian GP, "Toto is right; I think they also have the strongest power unit." Mekies added that Mercedes had again gained a significant advantage on the straights this weekend, and the track characteristics made this difference even more pronounced. Mekies then pointed to the following week, the Hungarian GP: "The second phase of ADUO is closing in Budapest, we'll see what happens."“

Where do we stand in the ADUO process?

The first phase of ADUO placed the Red Bull-Ford Powertrains power unit at the top of the V6 engine rankings. Mercedes finished 2-4 percent behind Red Bull in this evaluation; this difference earned Mercedes one additional development slot this season and another next season. Ferrari, Audi, and Honda were considered to be more than 4 percent behind Red Bull, earning them two additional development slots this season and two next season. The official results for the first phase have not yet been published due to Red Bull's objection.

The second phase of ADUO began with the Monaco GP and will conclude next week at the Hungarian GP. The FIA is expected to announce the results within two weeks of that date. If Mercedes takes the top spot in the second phase, Red Bull will need its engine to be at least 2 percent behind Mercedes' to qualify for additional development rights. Following the rumors from Belgium, the Hungarian GP and the subsequent ADUO announcement have become a critical turning point that could directly affect the course of the season.

Source

www.motorsport.com

Toto Wolff stated clearly after the Belgian GP that the Mercedes power unit is the most powerful engine on Formula 1 tracks.
