However, whether the implemented software fix actually works cannot be tested under the conditions of either the Hungarian or Dutch Grand Prix; the definitive answer will only be available at Monza.<\/p>\n<h2>The root of the problem: Premature depletion of energy.<\/h2>\n<p>Russell repeatedly stated that he was noticeably slower than his teammate Kimi Antonelli on the straights at both Silverstone and Spa; this observation was confirmed by telemetry data. The team&#039;s initial investigations quickly revealed no power loss or top speed deficit in the power unit itself. In the first sector of Spa, from La Source to the Les Combes braking point, Russell&#039;s sector times matched Antonelli&#039;s, effectively refuting any hypothesis of a simple power deficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Following the qualifying rounds, engineers shifted their focus to the software. According to Motorsport.com, this anomaly, hidden deep within the power unit management code, required several days of analysis to fully understand. The core problem was that the software was using electrical energy too much and too early in the first part of the lap. As a result, the energy distribution became unbalanced throughout the lap; every kilowatt-hour gained at the start of the lap had to be paid back in later sectors when the driver was still waiting for power. This imbalance was most evident in the third sector of Spa.<\/p>\n<h2>Correction made, verification left to Monza.<\/h2>\n<p>The software update was implemented at Mercedes&#039; engine plant in Brixworth. Some within the team believe a smaller part of the problem may also be linked to Russell&#039;s driving style. As McLaren team principal Andrea Stella recently explained, current Mercedes power units incorporate an adaptive logic system that learns the driver&#039;s habits over time and adjusts energy management accordingly. It is speculated that in the presence of the software error, this learning process may have further reinforced the undesirable behavior. However, Mercedes is confident that they have identified the primary cause of the problem and will not need to replace the power unit.<\/p>\n<p>Hungaroring and Zandvoort are not suitable for the real test of the correction; their conditions are not sufficiently similar to the high-speed characteristics of Silverstone and Spa, where the anomaly was first revealed. Confirmation can only come at the Italian GP in Monza. In the short term, there is some relief for Russell: since the impact of straight-line performance on overall lap time is quite limited at Hungaroring, the British driver can prepare for the race this weekend without constantly worrying about being at a disadvantage.
