According to Russell, some of the numbers displayed on the screen were not correctly calibrated, preventing the power unit from operating at its full potential.

Russell had an extremely difficult weekend at Spa-Francorchamps. Qualifying half a second behind his teammate Kimi Antonelli, the British driver's battery ran out on the Kemmel Straight, and as he approached the Les Combes corners, he made contact with Lewis Hamilton at turn 5, getting stuck in the gravel trap. His frustrations about the car's battery life during that contact were reflected in unreleased radio communications.

The change in driving style was in vain.

Russell had been trying to change his driving style for several races before Belgium in an attempt to close the gap to Antonelli; Mercedes' data at the time also indicated this approach. However, the Spa data proved that the problem wasn't actually with his driving style. Russell summarized the situation with these words: “There's nothing wrong with the hardware, there's no hardware problem. Some of the numbers on the screen weren't calibrated exactly correctly. And there was another separate problem at Spa as well; both were related to the same calibration error. Now we know which numbers are potentially wrong, we can correct those values and get the power unit running at full performance.”

Russell also added that Piastri had encountered a similar distribution problem in Belgium, and that one of their issues was the inability to optimally distribute power throughout the tour.

A relaxed Russell for the Hungarian GP.

The British driver explained that during the sessions at Silverstone and on Friday and Saturday at Spa, he constantly had to think about how to drive to accelerate the power unit on the straights, how to open the throttle, how to use the gears, and the timing of pressing the gas pedal too early or too late. Admitting that the effort spent re-optimizing his driving technique over the three sessions ultimately proved futile, Russell commented: “This has lifted a huge weight off my mind. I’m now looking forward to a weekend where I can focus on driving fast and doing the simple things. I know that’s how I perform at my best.”

The 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix will take place at Hungaroring from July 23-27, 2026. Russell is preparing for this race with renewed confidence, thanks to the resolution of the technical issue, rather than the loss of confidence stemming from Spa.

Source

www.motorsport.com

George Russell explained that the drop in performance in recent races was due to a software calibration error in the power unit, not his driving style.
