In his 'You Ask The Questions' section, where he answers Autosport readers' questions ahead of the 2026 Le Mans, the Polish driver explained how his rally accident hampered his F1 career and how the AF Corse Ferrari 499P partially compensated for that disappointment.

The accident also ruined the Ferrari contract.

On February 6, 2011, Kubica suffered a serious accident at the Ronde di Andora rally in Italy, sustaining permanent injuries to his right arm and leg. What was not publicly known at the time was that Kubica had already signed a contract to move from Renault F1 to Ferrari for the 2012 season. The accident effectively invalidated this agreement; Kubica was sidelined for a year and a half, and it took him six years to return to racing. He did return to F1 in 2019 and briefly again in 2021.

The emotional calculations behind AF Corse's decision.

Kubica stated that his decision to sign with AF Corse at the end of 2023 was largely based on emotional considerations. “One of the reasons I decided to race for AF Corse at the end of 2023 was this: I overcame many of the bad memories after my accident, but there was still a bit of a scab – the fact that I never got to sit in a Ferrari F1 car,” said Kubica. “If I hadn’t taken this opportunity, I would have regretted not driving a Hypercar Ferrari in the future. So this decision was more of an emotional choice than a technical one,” he added. He also added a noteworthy nuance: “I’m not a Ferrari driver, I’m an AF Corse driver; I just drive a Ferrari 499P,” clearly distinguishing between the two concepts.

Kubica, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2025 with Phil Hanson and Ye Yifei in an AF Corse Ferrari 499P, is currently 41 years old. In the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours, he finished seventh with the same teammates; a podium finish has yet to slip through his fingers this season. The 2026 World Endurance Championship (WEC), which has also been in the news due to the controversial Balance of Power (BoP) secrecy, promises to be highly competitive. Another dimension of nostalgia for Ferrari's moments of victory in F1. You can read about Lewis Hamilton in the news article that compares him to Schumacher.

Sources

Motorsport.com – All – Stories

Robert Kubica, 2011’deki ralli kazası nedeniyle Ferrari F1 koltuğunu kaybetmenin yıllarca içinde ‘kanama’ gibi hissettirdiğini; ancak AF Corse Ferrari ile Le Mans 24 Saat’te yarışmanın bu yarayı iyileştirdiğini açıkladı.

[4
475,477,476,10,253,478,252,474,479
post-946","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-f1","tag-af-corse","tag-dunya-dayaniklilik-sampiyonasi","tag-ferrari-499p","tag-formula-1","tag-le-mans-24-saat","tag-phil-hanson","tag-robert-kubica","tag-wec","tag-ye-yifei
["GET
