Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, after securing five consecutive victories in the 2026 Formula 1 season and placing himself at the top of the championship standings, has sharply responded to comparisons with legendary Ayrton Senna. In a statement released to the public on June 22, 2026, Antonelli rejected such comparisons, emphasizing that he is still at the beginning of his career.

Antonelli: "Senna is my idol, but this comparison isn't fair."”

Antonelli responded to comparisons with Senna, fueled by both their physical resemblance and his outstanding performance this season, with these words: “That’s a very strong question. I haven’t read the comparison, but honestly, I don’t like it. I don’t deserve to be compared to someone who wrote the history of the sport; I haven’t even achieved a tiny fraction of what he did. Therefore, I don’t think this comparison is fair. Yes, Senna is my idol and I am inspired by him; but I don’t want to be compared. I’m still at the beginning of my career, I have a lot to do, a lot to improve, and I still see myself as very far from his level.”

5 wins, a 41-point lead, and a mechanical failure in Spain.

Antonelli has taken the lead in the championship by finishing first in five consecutive races this season. Lewis Hamilton, the previous owner of the Mercedes seat he vacated and a seven-time world champion, is in second place, 41 points behind Antonelli. Tensions on the track with his teammate George Russell also remain a prominent issue this season.

However, things didn't go as planned for Antonelli at the Spanish Grand Prix weekend. Having taken a clear race lead from Russell, Antonelli was forced to retire due to a mechanical failure just as he was starting to pull away. At that point, the points gap stood at 66.

Sainz: “Antonelli can win the championship, I'm 100% confident.”

Before the Spanish Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz was asked whether Antonelli's advantage could be overcome. Sainz offered the following assessment: “We don't even know exactly how many races are left due to the calendar, so it's difficult to put a number on how much of the championship is in Kimi's hands. But he has performed excellently this year, using his car and his opportunities to win to the fullest. As we saw with Oscar and Lando last year, the pressure increases as you get closer to the championship. When you reach that critical point, the seriousness of the situation becomes apparent. I have 100% confidence in Kimi. If he maintains this pace, it won't be easy for anyone to overtake him.”
