David Alonso set a new track record with a time of 1:57.718 at the 2026 Moto2 Czech Republic GP qualifying session in Brno on Saturday, June 20, 2026, securing pole position. The Colombian rider achieved his first Moto2 pole position and also made history as the first Colombian driver to take pole in Moto2 history. Deniz Öncü, representing Türkiye in Formula 1, will start the race from the midfield, in 22nd place.
Despite the accident, he was still in pole position.
Alonso, who was also the fastest in Friday's practice sessions, made a strong start to qualifying, recording his first fastest lap of 1:57.718, which remained unmatched throughout the session. However, after completing his record lap, Alonso crashed at the first corner, losing the chance to improve his time for the rest of the session; but his time was more than enough for pole position. A similar situation befell his teammate Daniel Holgado; the Spanish driver went off track after setting his fastest lap, but still secured third place.
Second place went to Czech home driver Filip Salac. The American Racing driver finished just 0.205 seconds behind leader Alonso. Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez improved his time in the final minutes of the session to move into fifth place; his teammate Senna Agius was right behind him. Ivan Ortola, who received a long lap penalty after the crash in Hungary, finished sixth.
