Tensions between Carson Hocevar and Corey Heim escalated at the Brickyard 400 race of the NASCAR Cup Series at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On lap 91, Hocevar, the Spire Motorsports driver, not only failed to overtake Heim as he entered the pit lane, but also showed his rival the middle finger from the doorway.

Heim had allowed team owner Denny Hamlin to pass him at the pit entrance; however, he did not show the same courtesy to Hocevar. At the end of the race, Hocevar offered an unusual interpretation of the gesture: “I just wanted to wave and say hello. He’s first, he won,” he said. While acknowledging that Heim’s car was extremely fast, Hocevar added that he aimed to overtake his rival as his own team improved.

Heim's calm response

Heim finished the race in first place and only learned about the middle finger gesture during the post-race broadcast on TNT Sports. When questioned about it at the press conference, he first asked where Hocevar finished; upon receiving the answer "ninth," he reacted: "You're talking so much about someone who finished ninth, it's unbelievable. I just made sure he was behind me, and I finished ahead of him." Heim also added, "I inflicted a huge defeat on him.".

Regarding the blocking maneuver in the pit lane, he stated, "I was trying to protect my entry point, I didn't really make a hard move. He didn't like it, but he lost, I won; I don't care.".

The roots of the competition: The 2023 Truck Series championship

The tension between the two drivers dates back to the 2023 NASCAR Truck Series championship race. In that race, Hocevar spun Heim, and Heim's retaliation resulted in a yellow flag. This ended Grant Enfinger's championship hopes, and Ben Rhodes won his second championship that night. Heim's behavior shows that he still hasn't gotten over the incident.

Hocevar described the two drivers' ability to influence each other with these words: “We are both good at manipulating the weather; that’s why we often drive each other crazy. I wish they were still running it part-time; because in the end, it’s a car I have to contend with.” Hocevar finished the race in ninth place.
