The sixth round of the 2026 MotoGP season, the Catalunya Grand Prix, presented a chaotic spectacle that will go down in racing history.
Two red flags, a fresh start.
The race, restarted due to multiple red flags, was completed in just 12 laps, and even the off-track results were provisional; post-race tire pressure penalties radically changed the picture.
Fabio di Giannantonio, despite the damage and discomfort to his hand resulting from the collision, did not retire from the race and finished in first place. However, the real drama unfolded after the finish line.
Penalty shootout earthquake
Joan Mir, Pecco Bagnaia, Alex Rins, Jack Miller, Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, and Raul Fernandez were among the six drivers investigated for low tire pressure during the race. Bagnaia was cleared on the grounds that the low pressure, caused by a leak in the wheel rim, was not his fault. The other five drivers were each given a 16-second penalty. As a result of these penalties, Mir dropped from second to 13th place, and Razgatlıoğlu dropped to 15th.
The new face of the championship table.
According to the revised results from Catalunya, the championship standings are as follows: Fabio di Giannantonio's victory provided Ducati with much-needed relief in the absence of their only active factory rider (Marc Marquez was undergoing surgery). Marco Bezzecchi retains the championship lead with Aprilia, while Jorge Martin remains just one point behind. Di Giannantonio is third, Pedro Acosta fourth; however, the standings, marked by crashes and penalties, remain worrying for the Ducati factory team.
Marc Marquez is out, Ducati is in jeopardy.
Reigning champion Marc Marquez underwent surgery on his right foot and shoulder after a fall in the Le Mans sprint; he will miss both Catalunya and Mugello. This marks the Ducati factory team's tenth consecutive Grand Prix Sunday without a podium finish, a crisis that poses a serious headache for the team's 2026 campaign.
