Aprilia factory rider Marco Bezzecchi was transferred to Groningen University Hospital (Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen) on Sunday, June 28, 2026, complaining of severe pain following a high-speed crash during the disputed MotoGP Dutch Grand Prix. CT scans and radiological examinations revealed no injuries, and the 27-year-old Italian rider was discharged that evening and returned to his country.

How did the accident happen?

Bezzecchi was battling for third place with reigning champion Marc Marquez at turn 15 when his Aprilia's front wheel failed. This high-speed error sent the rider flying into the gravel; Bezzecchi rolled several times before coming to a stop near the barrier. Reported to be conscious immediately after the incident, the Italian was pictured sitting against the barrier in an area surrounded by track officials. Bezzecchi was taken to the circuit medical center and, following initial examinations, was referred to a hospital on the decision of the medical team led by MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte.

According to Aprilia's statement, initial clinical examinations confirmed that the driver was fully conscious, had normal mobility in all four limbs, and showed no signs of major neurological or systemic complications. However, due to severe pain resulting from the high-energy impact, the medical team deemed it appropriate to transfer the driver to hospital for comprehensive imaging and specialist scans. A second statement released later in the day reported that Bezzecchi had passed all tests clear and would return home tonight.

Impact on the championship standings

This zero points at the Dutch GP marked Bezzecchi's third consecutive points-less weekend. After a month-long streak of not finishing races following his victory at the Italian GP, Bezzecchi was forced to retire from the Hungarian GP after a collision with Jorge Martin, and was disqualified from the Czech GP for contact with a steward during the sprint. Following the incident in the Netherlands, Bezzecchi dropped to second place in the overall championship standings, seven points behind Jorge Martin.

Meanwhile, in the same race, Pedro Acosta had to crawl due to a wrist injury, while Ai Ogura won the race. Aprilia announced that they will share additional information regarding Bezzecchi's health condition after receiving official reports from the hospital.
