With the German Grand Prix marking the 11th race of the MotoGP season and the midpoint of the calendar, the consensus points system has been recalculated. Based on data from the last 12 months, Aprilia has moved up to Rank B, while Ducati has dropped from A to B, and Honda from C to D. The current system will close at the end of the 2026 season; in 2027, all manufacturers will start from scratch in Rank B.
Ducati finished the A-class standings with a half-point difference.
In the current consensus system implemented in 2024, Ducati has consistently remained in the most restrictive A tier. To stay in this tier, a minimum of 85% of the available points must be accumulated in the last 12 months; however, the Italian manufacturer fell just half a point short of this threshold with 84.5%, dropping to B tier. Aprilia, on the other hand, accumulated 72% of the available points in the last year, moving from C tier (previously occupied by both manufacturers) to B tier (covering the 60-85% range). KTM, with 49.8%, still hasn't reached the B tier threshold and remains in C tier.
Honda had moved up from D to C in the standings at the end of the 2025 season; however, they only managed to maintain this position for half a season. During the 12-month period examined, the Tokyo-based manufacturer collected only 31.8% of the available points. Falling below the 35% threshold required to remain in C, this percentage relegated Honda back to D. Yamaha, with 23.5%, never reached C and remains at the bottom.
Two prominent names stand out for Ducati, who have regained their wildcard spot.
With the change in the convention, Ducati has secured three wildcard slots for the next six months after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus. These slots can be used by factory test rider Michele Pirro and Italian rider Nicolo Bulega, who is currently leading the World Superbike Championship; Bulega is expected to race under a factory contract with VR46 next season. Furthermore, Ducati's test tire quota has increased from 170 to 190, while retaining the single aerodynamic update slot.
The most significant difference for Aprilia is the reduction in the number of test tires from 220 to 190; other opportunities have remained largely unchanged. On the other hand, Honda, having dropped to D, will now be able to test with race drivers, gain 40 additional test tires, and freely continue engine development. Yamaha, being in the same category, will continue to benefit from all these advantages.
The countdown to 2027 has begun.
The current consensus system will end with the close of the 2026 season, and from 2027 onwards, with the introduction of new 850cc motorcycles and Pirelli tires, all manufacturers will compete on equal footing in Class B. Many teams have largely halted development of the current 1000cc prototype, focusing instead on the next-generation machine. Some drivers rode these motorcycles at the Brno test, and the new bikes will also be on track at the Monday test immediately following the Austrian GP. It has been announced that all drivers on the 2027 grid will be riding the new motorcycles in Valencia on December 1st.
