Takaaki Nakagami has been confirmed to race as a wildcard rider for HRC at the Japanese MotoGP Grand Prix in Motegi, from October 2–4, 2026. Nakagami, who retired from full-time racing after the 2024 season, has been serving as an HRC MotoGP test rider since then.
Nakagami's first MotoGP track experience in 2026.
Nakagami had not yet competed in a MotoGP race this year as a wildcard. With Johann Zarco sidelined due to injury since May, and Cal Crutchlow replacing him, Nakagami has not had the opportunity to race. This race at Motegi will be Nakagami's first MotoGP appearance at the same track since last season. Looking at Nakagami's wildcard history, his best result was a sixth-place finish at the French Grand Prix in May 2025; last year, during his Motegi wildcard appearance, he failed to finish the Sunday race.
Wildcards may be coming to an end.
This race is also historically significant: from the 2027 season onwards, these kinds of one-off wildcard entries will be banned in MotoGP. As the 1000cc-Michelin era draws to a close, the rationale for developing wildcards naturally weakens. Yamaha and other manufacturers may still choose to send wildcard riders to Motegi or other races; however, the 2027 rules will completely close this door.
Nakagami made the following statement regarding the matter: “I am very happy to have the opportunity to race as a wildcard rider at the Japanese Grand Prix. Currently, as an HRC Development Driver, I am focused on the development of Honda’s MotoGP engine; this event offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate the progress we have made in testing under race conditions.”
Nakagami also emphasized the special significance of racing at his home track: “Racing at my home Grand Prix in front of Japanese fans makes this moment even more special. My goal throughout the weekend is to collect as much usable data as possible and contribute to improving the competitiveness of Honda’s MotoGP engine.”
The Japanese Grand Prix calendar continues, along with the Asian tour.
The 2026 Japanese MotoGP Grand Prix will take place in Motegi from October 2–4. It will be the first of two consecutive Asian Grand Prix events; the Indonesian Grand Prix will be held the following week.
